On October 23rd, the Bruin swim team attended the State meet in Tupelo, MS. The boys’ team placed second overall, with the girls coming close behind at third overall.

The boy’s team took home gold in the 400-yard freestyle relay consisting of Jack Clements, junior Chris Tomsuden, junior Tristan Ballard, and senior Elton Vandevender. The team also clinched second place in the 200-yard freestyle. Tomsuden placed first in the 500-yard freestyle and second in the 100-yard butterfly. Clements placed second in the freestyle event in addition to placing third in the 100-yard freestyle.

The girls’ team placed second in both the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays. Senior Elizabeth Weisenberger led both relay teams.

The road to State this year was difficult for the Bruins, as they not only had to deal with Covid-19 like other sports at St. Joe, but they also had to go through a rebuilding process. However, seniors Jack Clements and Elizabeth Weisenberger continued to lead the team with one goal in mind: making it to State.

“[Jack] and I really wanted to help the younger swimmers realize that we still had a chance at making State,” said Weisenberger. “That is what got us through all those early morning practices.”
