DreamWorks Animation’s 2004 hit Shrek 2 is one of the best movies in existence, and there is no use trying to convince me otherwise.
First of all, more often than not, movie sequels are far worse than their respective originals. Shrek 2is an exception. It is one of the best follow-up movies of all time, because not only is it just as entertaining as the first one, it could be argued that it is even better.
Second, instead of the characters becoming boring and flat, they remain dynamic from one movie to the next. Also, the new characters introduced in Shrek 2 do not feel as though they were added just for the sake of newness, but they moved the story along beautifully.
Puss in Boots, for instance, is the perfect example of a new character with major growth from the beginning of the movie to the end. He started as a mean, vengeful cat, motivated only by money, but by the end of the movie, he has real feelings and uses his ways for good instead of evil.
Third, what comes to mind first when you think of Shrek 2? Is it the potion factory scene? Of course, it is, because that one scene is enough to carry the entire movie. Enough said.
Fourth and finally, the Shrek 2 GameCube game is one of the best games in existence. You can count on me, as I’ve only ever played maybe six video games max. The Shrek 2 game is exciting yet win-able for someone who never plays any video games unless you count Wii Sports and Wii MarioKart. It’s not an “easy victory” (unless you’re my brother, of course), but it’s not so difficult that it becomes discouraging.
If it has been a while since you’ve seen Shrek 2, I encourage you to do so and keep an open mind. Hopefully, you will find in it the appreciation I have.
