This past week, senior Mary Hazel Bellan was named STAR Student, and Ms. Waldon STAR Teacher.

Bellan was named STAR student based upon her ACT scores and scholastic average. Following being awarded this honor, she chose Honors and AP Chemistry teacher Diane Waldon to be STAR Teacher, as she has had the greatest impact on her academic success.

The Bear Facts was able to reach out to Bellan to make this report.

The Bear Facts: How do you feel receiving this honor?

Mary Hazel Bellan: I am super grateful to be receiving this honor. With how weird this last year has been because of Corona, being named star student was an exciting way to end the year.

The Bear Facts: Ms. Waldon was named Star Teacher. How has she impacted your academic success?

Bellan: Mrs. Waldon is one of the most amazing and hard-working teachers I’ve ever had. Her intelligence and passion for teaching truly inspired me to want to learn more in all areas of study, not just chemistry. I will forever be grateful for all that she taught me.

The Bear Facts: What subjects do you enjoy the most?

Bellan: I’m kind of a nerd, so I enjoy pretty much every subject. If I had to pick favorites, it would be biology and literature.

The Bear Facts: How do you balance school and your extracurriculars such as soccer?

Bellan: I’m still trying to figure that part out. I prioritize what’s most important to me and try and make time for it all, but I still fall short a lot. Luckily I have supportive parents, friends, and teachers that are there for me when I get overwhelmed.

The Bear Facts: Do you have any hobbies outside of school?

Bellan: Yes! I love doing art, playing piano, making jewelry, cooking, and working out.

The Bear Facts: What would you say to younger kids who aim to succeed academically?

Bellan: Pick up an instrument and maybe try some yoga. Obviously study hard and all that, but also try and do things that are good for you brain outside of just schoolwork.

The Bear Facts: And lastly, how do you feel knowing that your Fahrenheit 451 review is one of our top viewed stories on thebearfacts.net at 2,768 views?

Bellan: Not gonna lie, I didn’t think anybody was going to read it, so that comes as quite the surprise. I love writing, so I’m glad i had the opportunity to be a small part of the journalism program.

Bellan was also named the BankPlus Blitz 16 Scholar-Athlete for her achievements as a Bruin soccer player as well as in the classroom.
